This was by far the best war-fiction I’ve read. Remarque’s writing is incredible, the way he characterizes the soldiers and the inner thoughts of Paul (main character) are just so intense. From the first sentence of the novel, you are included in the story, you are part of their horrific journey. The author’s note in the beginning is what you think about after finishing the novel: “It [the book] will simply try to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed by the war.”
