I really wanted to like this book because I love Judy Blume and the premise appealed to me, but it just didn’t deliver. Nothing about the plot was remotely satisfying and I found myself deeply uncomfortable by some of the descriptions of the young girls bodies. The age-gap romances were uncomfortable and never addressed properly. The bond between the two main characters was strong but strange. It was almost as if they were in a toxic relationship and couldn’t survive without the other. The ending wasn’t predictable but it also wasn’t unprecedented. This book left me feeling sad, a little hopeless, and unsatisfied.
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Child death, Chronic illness, Emotional abuse, Grief, and Classism
