Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera
5.0
Absolutely loved taking this journey with Juliet. Rivera captures the curiosity and heartbreak of learning how to love yourself even when those you love and admire betray you. Juliet’s baptism into queer, anti-racist identity asks us all to examine our privileges and be willing to speak truth to fear. I especially loved Rivera’s divergence from a narrative that says “love wins” to one that says “hold love accountable.” Most of all I loved the relationship between Kira and Juliet. Watching it blossom is a really joy, and the kind of story I longed for as a teenager! So glad that Rivera brought these characters to us. I’m holding out for a novella following Kira and Juliet more—Rivera said maybe, so I say, Yes please! Highly recommend this read.
