Blood of Tyrants by Naomi Novik

3.0

The book was good. The plot complicated without being difficult to follow, and there was certainly lots of adventure. The trouble was that all of the adventures were misadventures for the main characters -- one miserable event after another. It gets depressing, and after a while, a bit dull. The ending was disappointing. I knew going in that this book is one of a series, but I dislike it when an author cuts a plot off sharply, with no resolution, with the obvious intent of continuing in the next book. I'd prefer each story to stand on its own merit. I'm not more inclined to read the next installment just because this one ended unresolved and with our heroes in dire circumstances. That said, I will likely read the next one when it comes out, because the series is fun and well-written, and there's nothing else quite like it. I mean, seriously? Dragons in the Napoleonic Wars? Worth reading.
