The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
5.0
Heartbreaking and beautiful. I've seen the movie, but the language of the book is so important in getting across the way Mr. Stevens (I just realized we never once learn his given name) thinks--and the ways he does not think about certain things, and what that costs him. An exercise in writing about a profoundly limited (and yet basically decent) man in a way that makes us sympathize and ache for him.
