this is an epic coming-of-age novel that describes the younger years of a boy who moves from Turkey to the Bijlmer. i thought it was wonderfully written; by describing so many facets of this family’s life, i was able to imagine their whole world. where they shopped for groceries, or went to school, or played soccer… it all came to life. it deals with domestic violence, language deficiencies and discrimination. considering how many topics were covered, i thought it was really well done.
the only reason i haven’t given this novel five stars, is because i was unable to connect to the story on a personal level. however, that might just be me!
