The Complete Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway: The Finca Vigia Edition by Ernest Hemingway

5.0

"The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber", "The Snows of Kilimanjaro", "Big Two-Hearted River", "One Trip Across", and "An African Story" are some of my favorites.

Reading this was a commitment I only realized after it was too late. Hemingway has a terse writing style leaving you feel like you got a chance to share in his lived experiences. I'd easily recommend some of his writing to someone looking for something new to read but maybe not 650 pages worth. The short stories above are a decent sample though. Hemingway is also not without his faults. The reading is full of dated stereotypes and terms that wouldn't be wise to include today. I think my favorite quote came from the very last story, "The Strange Country" where the philandering main character thinks to himself, "I suppose, though, it finally becomes a social defect to be unable to believe any marriage has not really been consummated until the husband has committed suicide." Poignant and topical. I'll probably read some of his more famous works soon.
