The Trouble with Peace by Joe Abercrombie

adventurous dark funny medium-paced

5.0

Another easy 5 star read from my favourite author.

Abercrombie writes a middle book better than anyone. The way he manages to tell a fully self-contained story here from start to finish,  while further developing the excellent characters from book 1, and still tying everything in to the arcs and themes of the trilogy and setting up book 3? Masterful.

Plot wise I think this may even be my favourite First Law book to date. The way Abercrombie places each of his POV characters and how he intertwins their stories and arcs is like nothing I've seen before. There's a particular chapter here in Styria with King Jappo that was just magnificent.

I also don't think the characters in Age Of Madness get enough credit. Sure, they're not as iconic as Logan or Glokta, but my god they are still some of the most masterfully crafted characters I've ever read. Orso is a particular stand-out for me, though Savine and Brock are just as good.
