The Fatal Shore: The Epic of Australia's Founding by Robert Hughes

informative reflective slow-paced

3.0

The book is well written, but has some items that detract from it to cause the rating to be middling.  First is that the coverage over three distinct areas of mainland Australia, Tasmania, and Norfolk Island as separate histories causes some overlap of characters and stories that can tire you over 600 pages.  Secondly, the amount of violence inherent to the story feels like it is dwelt upon too much.  Lastly, the author uses quite a few references that have no context, which makes them hard to understand.
