The setting was what I loved most about this novel, along with the innocent narrative voice that described it. It was so beautiful and evocative and our narrator’s reverence for the place was deeply moving. The middle of the novel lost some of the atmosphere and focus on setting as it instead focused on the plot and mystery which I personally didn’t enjoy as much as the setting was this novel’s main selling point for me (not to say that the plot wasn’t good). A solemnly magical read overall though.

- Update: On reread this book really held up, I had forgotten a lot of the mystery but the atmosphere had really stuck with me and returning to the House was so special. I largely agree with my feelings before although I enjoyed the mystery a bit more now that I knew to expect it, it didn’t feel like it took me out of the setting as much.
