This book was so much better than I thought it would be. I added it to my TBR earlier this year because Goodreads recommended it to me in the "historical fiction" genre. I have always been curious about Norse history, but most of my historical fiction forays have stayed in the Tudor era. It was really cool to delve into this historical fantasy novel (as the authour put it at the end of the book) and learn about Norse history. I loved the magical, witchy elements—it felt like the perfect autumn read. I adored the characters: Gunnhild and Oddny, whilst flawed and extremely different, were so engaging to read about. There were also some really tense moments in the book that made me scared to keep reading. I felt emotional at the end of the book, and that's when it hit me that I was more attached to these characters and their stories than I had thought. A really great read. 4.75 stars—I'm a sucker for flawed characters, sisterly bonds, magic, and enemies-to-lovers, and I enjoyed the time period more than I thought I would. I've already added Gornichec's book The Witch's Heart to my TBR. I really recommend this!
