Okay I loved this book, so far my fave in the Hathaways series! Harry Rutledge is MY MAN - he's harsh and has zero connection to his emotions and he's commanding and he's basically perfect. I could fix him. I also loved Poppy - her natural optimism is the perfect balance for Harry and her desire to help him find his whole self and heal his childhood trauma is SO pure. My only real complaints about this book are that we spent too long with Harry and Poppy emotionally ruining each others lives and I would have preferred to spend a touch more time in the reconciliation/relationship building era, and that the final external conflict feels VERY rushed. But it can't be a LK book without a moment of mortal peril so! I accept it!

This book could be an effective standard alone if you're a big historical romance fan and you've never read a Kleypas. BUT it's not a good first histrom- there's some stuff in here that rly only works if you're very familiar with the genre (mainly, a moment of somewhat questionable consent depending on the perspective of the characters).
