2nd Read Review: I haven't read this book in 6 years, and the book I read then, and the book I read just now did not feel like the same to me. I can't figure out if the book got revised or my memory is failing me.
In my first read I felt Apollo was unredeemable. I felt he put his dead wife before Maddie. I felt he was cruel to Maddie, especially after the treatment she got from his twin in her world. Treatment he knew of and still he was cruel to her. I felt very strongly about how badly he treated her, and yet after doing a re-read just now, I didn't see that much cruelty that I could have sworn was in the book the first time.
I really wish I knew if this book has been revised because if it hasn't, then I'm kind of blown away by how this affected me so differently from the first time. Apollo had his mean moments, but this time he wasn't as cruel as I remembered. His affection for her seemed to be more pronounced. He even admits to being happier with Maddie than he was with his deceased wife. I really don't remember that ever happening. Because of this, I did change my rating and gave it an extra star. It still doesn't compare to the other books in the series but obviously it wasn't as bad as I originally thought it was.
What I do remember being the same is how much I swooned over Dax Lahn and his appearance in this book. Man, why can't authors write more heroes like him?
1st Read Review: I'm loving this series but I did not like this book. The Hero was an A-whole and I didn't feel like he redeemed himself by the end. Sadly I don't feel like I could have skipped it since it reveals more to the overall story in the series as a whole.
For me the Hero can make or break a book. I just couldn't get on board with Apollo's treatment of Maddie. She was unjustly dumped on throughout the whole book and I just got angrier the more I read. Add in that the dead wife might as well have been living, she was referred to so much in this book that I don't even think a chapter went by with out her being brought up.
This just isn't how I want to see a heroine treated by the hero. She deserved better and I ended up hating Apollo by the end of the book.
***Narrator review: Tillie Hooper did an outstanding job and the only reason I could stand continuing the book to the end. I highly recommend the audio version.
