Watchmen by Alan Moore

3.0

It took me way longer than I anticipated to finish it.
My impressions about this book are very conflicting: on the one hand, I liked the idea of depicting superheroes as humans with all their flaws and exploring them as a social phenomenon. This book is certainly beyond a superhero comic, it's a complex story about people, their traumas, and life in the Cold War atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

On the other hand... I found it so difficult to relate to. There was not a single character I cared about. It might be that the authors did the job of depicting superheroes as flawed humans too well. Or maybe it's a story from the different times when different archetypes and different people seemed likable than they are today.

I am also not sure if it's my inexperience reading comics or the flaws of storytelling but even the culminations felt bland and somewhat watered down. I knew the story had the potential to make me care more about it than it actually did.

To sum up, the book is definitely a classic, it's worth reading and I liked the overall concept. It, however, wasn't a story I could relate to.
