An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

3.0

Beginning before America’s “discovery” by Europeans, Dunbar-Ortiz traces the history of the Indigenous nations and peoples in North America through today, highlighting their attempts at survival against the overbearing pressure of the United States. A wealth of (cited) research went into this work, and it’s clear that a lot of work went into keeping it brief and accessible.

The downsides (for me) were (1) that many sections were oddly not chronological, leaving the reader to sort out the order of events, and (2) I found very little that was new information. (Perhaps a reader less familiar with U.S. history would find some of this more startling and horrifying.)

(I have published a longer review on my website.)
