Are classic dystopian stories finally becoming trendy again?! I can’t wait for book 2 to come out, and book 1 wasn’t even been released yet!
Thank you to Faber & Faber for sending me a review copy of Songlight in exchange for an honest review.
I adored this book, and I will be recommending it a lot over the next few months. It reminded me more of The Handmaid’s Tale than The Hunger Games, but the writing style makes it feel more YA.
In a world where those with songlight are demonised (and lobotomised and turned into slaves), Elsa has learned to hide her telepathic power to protect herself. When her anguish results in another girl with songlight, Nightingale, being drawn to her, the two connect despite the miles between them.
There were multiple POVs: Elsa, Nightingale, Piper (Elsa’s brother), Rye (Elsa’s lover) and Swan (a renowned figure involved in the government). Every POV added something, and each character was nuanced and relatable.
I loved the dystopian feel to the book, the characters and friendships/romances were incredible and the plot was paced just right. No complaints at all - I am already desperate to read book 2!
