Hard SciFi with a Tremendous Heart

I picked up this book after reading a short story by Wilson in the "Galactic Empires" anthology and greatly enjoying it. This book deserves its Hugo and every other award. It is the best of scifi - exploring themes about both the universe and what it means to be human; deep time and the passage of our single, brief human lives. It is hard scifi and yet affects the reader only because of the compelling characters it creates - something all too rare in science fiction.
