Land of the Lustrous 1 by Haruko Ichikawa

3.0

This is definitely a manga that shines best (no pun intended) when paired with its anime. I honestly think I would have found Land of the Lustrous Vol. 1 confusing and boring had I started with the manga. The anime's aesthetic and audio composition definitely gives the audience a better sense of the world and the plot. The "pretty" of the anime kept me watching long enough to truly appreciate the story. Had I started with the manga, I think I would have put it down.

Also, people should stop comparing this manga series to Steven Universe. The only similarities is that there are gems. It's WAY different from the show. It's also nothing like Sailor Moon. I'm not sure why the publisher decided to promote the manga by comparing the two? Maybe, and that's a BIG maybe, the art compares? I don't see it. Sailor Moon is one of my favorite series of all time. That comparison would have sold me to pick up this book and would have been really, really disappointed.
