The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt

5.0

I love this complex and intriguing story. The first chapter is so strong! The imagery is precise and powerful. The character development is realistic but also unfamiliar. The themes discussed are varied - love (or self; of parents; of romantic partners; unrequited love; abusive love; of material objects); addiction; stunted emotional development; the value and purpose of art; etc - but also fundamentally linked since they are ultimately all about obsession. I adore this book and highly recommend it.
