Christine by Stephen King

dark slow-paced

5.0

This is one of the few older King books that I haven't read yet and it's another one that I am mad I put off for so long. I was skeptical that I was going to absolutely love an almost 650 page book about a car that comes to life and murders people but I should have put my faith in King because he rarely disappoints. A big theme in this book is friendship and it is a theme I gravitate very hard towards and love when it is executed properly like in this book. I could see people having pacing issues with this one as it is a very slow start but I loved it. I also loved that 2/3 of the novel is written in first person while the middle third is third person. It is an interesting writing technique that I think could go poorly but works in this circumstance. This honestly might be one of my top five King works if I really think about it simply because of the ending. The last part of the last chapter and the epilogue hit me like a ton of bricks and left me both blubbering and with my mouth ajar. For fear of spoilers, I won't mention anything else but just know that I think this is one of King's best endings. I wouldn't recommend people start with this as their first King book but if you are a King reader and somehow have not read this one, it is definitely worth it.
