Because it’s a novella so locked into the perspective of the fox, there’s so much world building hinted at but not explored. There are so many interesting concepts that have little to no interrogation because there’s no view beyond what the fox sees and feels. There are also decisions, interactions with other characters from the fox’s past, and actions that go completely unexplained or happen off screen so it ends up feeling like a series of set pieces with no clear connective thread.
