Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling

4.0

So, I've been avoiding Harry Potter for a very, very long time. I've only ever seen clips of the films and I've never had much of an interest in the books. Any interest that I did have evaporated after seeing the film clips... I don't know why I've been so against it, because there are so many elements in the series that would normally appeal to me.

I recently started to work my way through a list of 'Books to read before you die' and, surprisingly, the Harry Potter books feature heavily. I made the decision to give them a go.

I was surprised at how easily I fell into Mr. Potter's story. The book was very easy to read, even with the high amount of characters being introduced, the new world being developed and the many nuances of wizardry. It wasn't particularly heavy and required little concentration. I can see why they are popular with both adults and children.

This book felt like a 'pilot' episode in a TV show, whereby the focus is setting up the world and its occupants without introducing anything too shocking or impacting. The only way I'd have made it this far without hearing spoilers would have been to live under a rock, so I'm not reading from a completely blank slate, just enough to enjoy the novel but not be surprised by it.

The characters are surprisingly more likable and a little cheekier than I've always imagined them. I smiled a few times and I found that I'd read the book rather quickly, and was a little disappointed that it was over. Luckily there is a whole series to catch up on!

Overall I am surprised by how much I enjoyed it!
