Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney

4.0

The Black Ya book I didn’t know I needed.
I was so proud of Quinn’s growth in both her friendships and her relationship with her family.
Standing up for yourself when you’ve been complacent for so long is not easy and I love how connecting with other black kids allowed her to understand all the discomfort she felt for years around her racist community and gave her a space to express herself without being gaslighted.

One thing I didn’t enjoy reading was Quinn reconnecting with Destany. I don’t care that she’s 18 I’m not buying the “didn’t know using racial slurs was wrong” victim act. I hope we get a sequel about a grown up Quinn that’s learned to ditch racist friends.
