Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert

2.0

I liked the style of writing, but very little else. The characters were so unlikeable I found it really hard to get past that - and the only ones I did care about (Berthe and Hippolyte) were hardly expanded upon at all. The club foot operation was the most gripping part of the book, which I think reflects pretty poorly on the book. I just didn't care enough about Emma, I didn't even feel that annoyed by her, she was just dull. My 2nd hand copy of this book had this note in the back "This woman is really annoying. So shallow. She can't really care for anything - seems to want to be unfufilled". I enjoyed the fact that someone was so annoyed by the character that they felt the need to write that note, and I agree with their sentiment, but less passionately. I'd maybe have given it a 2.5/5 on the strength of the writing style alone, if goodreads allowed half stars.
