Duke of Debauchery by Scarlett Scott

5.0

I always love Mrs. Scott’s work. I was wondering how she’d handle the mess that is Monty. Hattie had quite an aversion to Monty at the beginning due to his recklessness. Monty is haunted by demons, though, and his backstory is heartbreaking. He overcomes a laudanum addiction through sheer will, which I’m sure some people did, and of course Hattie was oblivious to his addiction. Makes sense that she was sheltered and naive, so she wouldn’t know. Hattie went from being relentlessly unforgiving to being very forgiving very abruptly, but she’s always carried a torch for Monty. I wasn’t convinced that Monty actually loved Hattie in the beginning, because he seemed so insincere, but it seems he must have loved her all along! There was a lot of heat between them and I was proud of Hattie for being woman enough to stand beside Monty in the face of addiction and shame.
