The Enchanted Wood by Enid Blyton

4.0

I read this book with my class of 28 5-7 year old children and they loved it. During the first couple of chapters, I was worried that the book wasn't going to hook them at all but they were soon completely engrossed in the story and they absolutely loved it. I actually really enjoyed it too and I had two days off sick at one point and was gutted that I'd miss those pages with the children. They loved all of the lands that were visited and the different characters with Saucepan man being a clear favourite. I found it great for reading to the children with different voices and such for each character, too.

I had to change some of the language as I was reading it to the children as parts were a little outdated or the vocabulary was a little too extensive for my class but this didn't take away from the story at all. In addition, some words were repeated A LOT through the story like 'dismayed' to the point that I began changing these words when reading it aloud.

All in all, we really loved it and couldn't tell for the most part that it's an old text. Considering reading the next with them, but I've seen from the blurb that cousin Dick comes to stay and I don't know if I should rename Dick or just hope I don't find any parts worth giggling at.
