The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
4.0
I'm so glad I happened to have this as part of my reading list for my children's literature class. I tried to read this many many years ago and I did not like it, nor could I get through it. That being so, I was certainly grumpy when I got the reading list. I had made my mind up long ago that this book was not for me, and not something I would like.
As you can tell from my rating, I had misjudged it! I ended up really enjoying it, and I have had a blast studying it so far. While it could be slow at times-my original gripe so many years ago- its charm has won me over. Altogether, it's made me rethink a lot of things, especially Tolkien in general. One thing my children's literature prof says all the time is how important a book can be for "the right child, at the right time". I suppose, now that I'm no longer a child but am 22, this was the right book for the right time :)
