The Grace Year by Kim Liggett

5.0

Another of my top 5 of what I've read this year.
This made me feel like I was living the experiences the grace year girls did. It felt wild and confusing and yet the exploration of self and the strength that comes with helping each other (specifically women helping women) was beautiful.

It was a tough read. By that I mean these girls go through hell and it feels like you're there with them. I liked the ending, though it left me with complicated feelings.

More thoughts on the ending:
Spoiler To explain more, I felt weird that her plan for a huge independent statement at the end gets derailed because of a baby. Especially since the importance of the baby first comes across as only important because its *HIS* baby. But I like the importance of having a girl. I also like that it doesn't tie everything up in a neat little bow. She doesn't overthrow the entire government in one year, she is just one of many women working to make their world better where they can even when it seems impossible. That ending meant a lot to me.

There were some things I didn't love about it, but it was complicated and made me feel a lot of feelings and I've been thinking of it ever since. So 5 stars.
