Day of the Accident by Nuala Ellwood

4.0

This is the first book I have read by this author and it held me enthralled from beginning to end. Maggie has been in a coma for 10 weeks following a near drowning in thick her daughter died. She can remember nothing of the accident and has no-one to help her as her husband disappeared during her illness. After discharge from hospital she has flashbacks that always seem to fade just as she is reaching for the knowledge she needs. Written partly as Maggie's story and partly in letters from her daughter Ellwood really creates the psychological tension throughout the novel. At the same time she gives nothing away - I had worked out that something was awry with one of the characters but the whole was very neatly wrapped in a blurring of time and place. The solution came as a complete surprise. A very well written narrative and great characters.
