So much happened here in so little time I don’t quite know what to think. I was convinced Mat‘s big plot wasn’t gonna happen until the next book because the pages left kept shrinking and shrinking, but I was positively surprised!
My favorite moments:
The Prologue made me cry and I didn’t even know any of those characters. That’s all that needs to be said I think. I have a soft spot for Borderlanders.
Rand and Tam also made me cry. You can see a pattern here.
Mat‘s big moment didn’t make me cry but it was really cool and it was almost like RJ‘s Mat was back (which I definitely prefer though you can tell Sanderson is trying his best).
ALSO: Aviendha‘s trip to Rhuidean was absolutely devastating. Her grappling with what the Aiel‘s future might hold and how she will be able to shape it was so so good. Aviendha hasn’t gotten quite enough attention in the series I think, I love her relationship to Elayne and I like her and Rand just fine, but we really haven’t seen enough POVs from her imo so this was very gratifying (while also gut-churningly sad).

Some stuff I didn’t like quite so much:
It feels like Sanderson has all these loose threads left over from RJ and now he’s obviously struggling to bring some of them to a satisfying conclusion.
I felt this already in TGS with
Masema‘s untimely demise. It truly felt like his story and RJ intentions with this plotlinw was cut short. In this book I felt the same way with the Gholam. It was teased up for 5 books to be this super unbeatable super monster with only one very particular weakness (which didn’t even play a major role in beating it) and the final battle between it and Mat was definitely a letdown especially since it came out of nowhere.
It’s not a black and white issue, Sanderson is obviously just trying to do his best with what he’s been given, but these have been some disappointments for sure.
The new It Couple Th*m and
Moiraine
I‘m not even grace with a comment except that I hate hate hate it. At least Siuan and Gareth Bryne had some character development (while I still don’t quite like them) But this?? I had been spoiled for it already, but I really thought they would at least get some in world explanation but nope. I hate it. That’s it.

Overall though I loved it and though I‘m sad this is the end I‘m very excited about starting A Memory of Light.
