Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison

4.0

Every which way but dead, the third book in Kim Harrison’s The Hollows series. Nothing short of eventful. It picks up three months after the events of the previous novel, The good, the bad and the undead. We find that the trial for Piscary ended earlier that day, and he was sentenced to 5 centuries in prison for the murders of the ley line witches. Rachel is in the process of fulfilling her part of the commitment with Algaliarept (Al, for short) to be his familiar, which frees his current familiar, Ceri. Ceri just happens to be an elf, over a thousand years old. She also outsmarts Al, agreeing to be his familiar, but keeping her freedom on HER side of the ley lines, instead of in the ever after. Al is not happy.

Kisten is still acting as Piscary’s scion during his incarceration, and the vampire world is unaware that it is Ivy that now holds that title. She prefers it that way, and Kisten is envious. He just can’t wrap his head around Ivy being so ungrateful for a gift he would die twice to have back…well, maybe not twice. We also see the relationship between him and Rachel heat up, as things with Rachel and Nick fizzle out. I just can’t really decide if I like Kisten or not. Their first date ends up being a bit…memorable.

Rachel is hired by Quen for security/escort during a meeting with Trent’s old friend, Lee. Trent is not happy about the bad brimstone that Lee’s father has allowed on the market. Rachel learns more about the business Trent runs, and the role her own father had played as well. She also meets Trent’s fiance, Ellasbeth. Lovely woman.
