Dark and Shallow Lies by Ginny Myers Sain
5.0
This book will always really divide opinions I think.
I skimmed a few reviews before reading and the triggers they talk about are true, but I feel like they were touched upon more than dove into in great depth. For some that is enough to be an issue and I do understand that.
I don’t think they could have been left out though as they are key motivations for a lot of the actions taken by these characters.
A lot of people didn't like certain characters in this book, personally I thought considering the environment they're "toxic" traits also made sense so I'm not mad about it. She could have given more to readers about the relationships these kids had together, though I feel like if done it may have bogged down the main plot of the book, so either way I don't think the author would have pleased everyone.
The whole psychic thing is underplayed a lot which I do like because if over used you'd know the ending, so what's the point of reading the book?
All in, it kept me interested in reading, so it is motivating. I didn't see the ending playing out the way it did even with the teasers the reader gets with her visions.
I feel like everyone will have to make their own decisions when it comes to books like these where hard topics are discussed, if it's too much walk away. If you are enjoying it, keep reading. No one but you can make that call. There are plenty of books I've walked away from but mostly due to not holding my attention rather than triggers.
