Once more, my kingdom for half stars. Alas, they don't exist. I'd probably give this one 2.5, inching closer to 3 as it's one of those rare books where I think it'd work better as a movie/TV show. Considering it's generally described as Buffy meets MIB, that makes sense. Thing is, it's not nearly as fun as either of those two (well, not the good parts of those two) and I get that it's Book One in a series (is it a series? is it just two books? I dunno.) but the ending doesn't quite manage to feel satisfactory after the gym showdown (which I actually really liked) and kind of just begs you to show back up for the second book.
I think there are fun ideas here. I didn't loathe the characters (yay!) and since I'm nowhere near the target audience anymore, I also understand if maybe they love it. I just didn't, though I am curious to see if book 2 is better.
