I got sent this arc in return for an honest review.
First I wanted to say I reached out to the author and had a wonderful conversation and discussion of the things I liked and didn’t like which I appreciate Maeve taking the time to discuss with me and I wanted to thank Maeve for the opportunity on sending me the ARC to read her debut novel. I wanted to love this book but I also need to be honest in my review.
What I loved:
- The playlist at the start of the book I listened to before starting the book.
- Short chapters are amazing I felt like I was flying through the book.
- Elias the character I loved as he was so sweet and understanding of Indigo.
- Plot twist knocked me side ways and I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was too shocked to cry
- Dual POV so we got chapters of Indigo and Elias.
- Also the paperback and cover of this book is stunning!
What I struggled with:
I received an ARC copy of this book and there were no trigger warnings mentioned before I started reading. Personally I don’t have any triggers but this may be an issue for some readers.
The plot and characters felt disconnected and I wanted more explanation of storyline. Some examples are:
- Indigos parents we got a few scenes only and then at 73% the real reason why they don’t get along but I felt it wasn’t enough and wanted more of a background.
- Why was Olivia hanging with Indigo and how old was Olivia?
- I wanted the mental health issues explored more and why she was taking medication.
- What was Indigos Job? I thought she was a dog walker but turned out she sell paintings but only occasionally.. I see this as more as a hobby.
- Who was Enya to Indigo? After a discussion with the author I missed this information in the book.
- I wanted Elias job more clearly explained aswell. I think he is a tree biologist?
As you can see I just have quite a few questions after reading the book.
Tropes I also struggled to understand.
- Fake Dating this could have been explored more as it’s only in 15% of the book. (This is advertised as the main trope)
- Billionaire yes the main character has money but I wouldn’t say billionaire
- Reverse Grumpy / Sunshine - I see this but I find her character more sad and reserved. She isn’t grumpy towards him just cautious
- Forced Proximity it wasn’t forced she made the choice to stay after the people who they had to fake date in front of asked if she would stay.
- Workplace this I’m not sure about my understanding of workplace is they work together but they don’t.
- Found Family I guess but she still has her parents just don’t get along so it is her boyfriends family.
Overall I was intrigued to keep reading to the end as I was waiting for more story and more plot information. It had potential just it felt very disconnected.
