The book has its moments—Geralt is his charming, gruff mix of stoicism and altruism; the supporting characters are mostly enjoyable, if too often built on stereotypes; the ending is quite sweet.

Overall though, the book is very slow. Geralt spends most of the first half dealing with court cases, sycophants, and an exasperating amount of farting women. While I’m satisfied enough after reading it, I nearly gave up multiple times.
