This is a somewhat different werewolf (and a few other things that go bump in the night) story. At least it was different from things that I have read before. Then, I am primarily a Science Fiction guy so I cannot say that I have read very many Fantasy or Urban Fantasy book so far. I call it a werewolf story and werewolves are obviously the main ingredient but the main actor is, as you can deduce from the book blurb, not really a werewolf. The author also throws in a few witches and vampires to keep it interesting.
Unlike a lot of these kind of stories there is not really a really really big bad monster lurking around with nefarious schemes to subdue the humans and turn Earth into a living hell. Instead we are following Mercy and her werewolf (and vampire) friends going about their business solving their domestic werewolf problems. Okay, okay, that was perhaps quite a bit of an understatement in that it made the book sound boring. It is nothing of the kind.
Another interesting difference between this book and others that I have read is that it deals a fair bit with werewolf psychology and their interaction between themselves as well as other creatures. Werewolves are not just some monsters or handy guys to have around when you need to kick some bad guys behind but are presented as complex and interesting characters.
I have to say that I also liked that the book, unlike for instance the Sarah Beauhall series that I have read recently, does not dig itself down into a bunch of (unhappy) romance and failed love-life but stays focused on the core story. Sure there is a little bit of romantic feelings flying around but it never comes in the way of the progression of the story.
I will definitely continue reading this book series. The author have created an interesting world filled with supernatural entities and I am quite interested in reading what she makes of it next.
