This tiny book, a collection of short essays written at the end of Oliver Sacks's life, is a gem. As I approach my 70th birthday, it's lovely to read Sacks's reflections on approaching his 80th--his mercury, birthday, as he thinks of it, having been a devotee of the periodic table since childhood. In the remaining essays, he ponders his fatal cancer diagnosis and savors his alive-ness as well as his memories. Humane and insightful, as his writings always were. A lovely one-sitting read, even for this slow reader.
