Illegal by Andrew Donkin, Eoin Colfer

4.0

This graphic novel, aimed at ages 10 and up, tells the story of eleven-year-old Ebo and his older brother Kwame as they leave their village in Ghana to pursue a better life in Europe. The details of their journey, from the kindness of strangers to the dangers of border crossing, were taken from real immigrant experiences.

The book beautifully portrays Ebo as a real boy with talents, dreams, fears, and love. Ebo brings a face to the Faceless Illegal Immigrants our society so eagerly treats as a group instead of as individuals.

The story inspires compassion and I would love to hear a discussion between kids that read it. I wish something like this had been around when I was a kid.
