The Sandman Vol. 1: Preludes & Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman

4.0

What is someone tried to capture death and caught the master of dreams instead? That's pretty much the premise of this collection of comics. It's an interesting and disturbing journey that won't be for everyone, but I enjoyed quite a bit.

The Sandman takes place in the DC universe so for those familiar with the world you're going to see a variety of cameos like the demon Etrigan, The Scarecrow, John Constantine, and the Martian Manhunter. The Sandman was a part of the Vertigo comics label, which is where DC put their more mature themed stories, and The Sandman is definitely a more mature read.

Overall I found the story pretty interesting. It maybe starts off a little slow, but once Dream gets free and starts his quest to reclaim his objects of power it becomes more interesting. After his quest is complete, we also get a book that highlights Death. Death is Dream's sister and probably not quite what you would expect of the entity, but I liked the how she is presented.

Overall, I found the story interesting and intriguing. In terms of art style, I didn't hate it, but I also didn't really love it either. It's a distinct style from the late 80s and early 90s, but it's just not my favorite. This is definitely going to be a taste thing, as I'm sure there are people who enjoy this style, but I'm just not one of them.

So while I found myself enjoying the story parts of the book, although there are some parts that get quite strange, I was more mixed on the art style of the book. I'm still interesting in continuing on through the series though and will be looking forward to the further stories of Dream and where his journey leads.
