Cain by José Saramago

4.0

this book was truly insane for making the decision of letting cain and the lord converse with each other as equals. i found myself slogging through some of the middle sections of the book (because i feel like they all boil down to more or less the same thing: “God is cruel”) but i really enjoyed the ending coming full circle, even if it was in a darkly humorous way. i’ve never seen cain described as “a brother deceived by God before” and the scene where cain is the one who stops abraham from sacrificing his son because the angel was late was uniquely horrible to me because of that…
