The pacing of this book was a little all over the place for me, but something about it kept me hooked and reading. I think the second half of this book onward is more successful than the front half. Also in the beginning that's where I struggled with their sort of instalove for one another - especially considering the FMC defining belief was how much she despised what the MMC is. But once you get to know them (and ultimately accept their attraction) it's a much smoother ride.

I'm intrigued by the magic system and the lore within the world (gods, goddesses, religion, immortals, etc.). A lot of the "twists" were easy to guess, but then again the foreshadowing is pretty explicit so I don't think it was intentionally vague.

Ultimately, I ripped through the second half of the book and feel like a very promising set up has been constructed for book 2. I don't know why, but I have a feeling book 2 is going to blow this one (and my expectations) out of the water. Here's to hoping!

If you're looking for a complex and interesting magic system, a break from some of the trends in fantasy right now (fae, supernatural, etc.), a return to some of the fantasy classics (quests, medieval influence, folklore), and finally leading to some pretty excellently written spice... give this one a shot!
