The Core by Peter V. Brett

5.0

Oh my goodness what a ride it’s been! This series has taken me just over a month to read, and I feel like I’ve grown up and aged alongside our beloved characters, gaining some of their wisdom (perhaps), and their lust for survival (certainly).

I found this instalment probably the most anxiety inducing and entertaining, with all the loose ends tying up in a pretty satisfactory (albeit slightly sad) manner.

Among the things that will stick with me the longest out of this series is the brotherly relationship between Ahmann and Arlen, for the two have demonstrated what it is to respect differing faiths (or lack thereof), while battling one’s own doubts.

Furthermore, the way in which the world-building was constructed leaves me bereft in the real world, for where the heck am I meant to get 3 cups of couzi to toast the ending of this series?!

Here is a little recap of the phrases that have become a part of my inner daily monologue after this past month:
- it is inevera = when things go according to plan; or not
- par’chin = me when I succeed in doing the bare daily minimum)
- couzi = literally any spirit
- Creator!/ Everam’s beard! = Fuck me!

!!!!SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

Here’s my favourite comedic relief moment:

-> the COVID-19 Zoom vibes we get when Ahmann reaches the holy site underneath the ground, and creates a Bluetooth connection between himself, Arlen, Renna, Leesha and Inevera
