This book was horrifying. Near the middle, I found myself so horrified by what was happening and what could happen that I had to set it aside for minutes at a time, squelching a silent scream in my chest. It was also so smart, especially the very end.
So many of the descriptions were disquieting throughout. And the mold and rot seeped into the pages. The dream sequences were particularly discomforting and eerie.
Even at the end, I still feel anxiety for the characters, although what an excellent last line after a book like this one.
I’m horrified—absolutely horrified.

Graphic: Body horror, Death, Emotional abuse, Gore, Incest, Racism, Sexual assault, Xenophobia, Blood, Cannibalism, and Murder
It’s definitely a horror novel. But be aware that a lot of the themes and elements of the novel revolve around incest, body horror related to fungi, and taking away the voices of women. The lead is strong and fights/investigates this the whole way, but the way minorities and women are seen as just bodies really affected me as I read. So be aware. The point is that Noemi is fighting it. But it doesn’t stop its existence or prevalence in the story.
