Gender: A Graphic Guide by Meg-John Barker, Jules Scheele

3.0

This graphic guide is informative, insightful and illuminating. It's a fantastic and accessible introduction to the topic of gender for people of all ages. However, even those that are informed on gender, are likely to come away having learned something new. It succinctly explores the definitions and evolutions of gender and sex, dissecting masculinity, feminity, cis, non-binary, gender fluid and trans identities. It explores understandings of gender throughout history and what they are in modern Western society today, and how these understandings fit in the wider context of patriarchy, capitalism, race, disability and sexuality. Since gender is such a complex and broad subject, it isn't by any means a exhaustive overview of gender. However, it adequately condenses as much information as possible into a couple hundred pages and is a great starting point for anybody that wants to educate themselves on gender. Although this could be a valuable read for all ages (I certainly came away having learned a lot!), I think it'd be particularly valuable for younger audiences as it presents complex information in a very accessible way through graphics and short bursts of text.
