In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O'Brien

4.0

This is a little bit spoilerish, but I don't think it will ruin the novel for anyone. John Wade is a Vietnam vet. He's married to Kathy. His behavior in Vietnam ruins his chances of winning a senatorial election, and Kathy disappears. The rest of the novel investigates the circumstances of her disappearance and its aftermath. Did he murder her? Did she just get lost in the wilderness? Was it all an elaborate plan the two of them put together to escape their debts and his scandal? If you're looking for definite answers, you won't find them in this book, but it's well-written, and the characters are interesting and sympathetic. It's a fine novel, but a certain type of reader will dislike the lack of definite answers.
