The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón

Aghhh I wanted to like this so much and I kept holding out hope it would get better but it was a huge disappointment imo.

First of all, the flowery language was SO over the top. I have a pretty decent vocabulary and I found myself having to google 2-3 words every sentence during large portions of the book. I eventually gave up and just skimmed over half the descriptive language or it was going to take me a year to get through the book.

Second, the characters were SO blah. It was so hard to empathize with any of them. It was even hard to remember some of them and their actions, even though every little thing was connected in the book so you HAD to remember them.

I honestly feel like this could’ve been half the length and twice as powerful. The last 20 pages were enticing, and I wish the rest of the book was like this.
