Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park

Wow! This book is amazing. I was an avid reader of the Little House series when it was popular in the late 60’s-early 70’s. I still have the set I collected that I read many times as a preteen/teen. The author has written a story that captures the details I loved as a child: the food, the shopping, the community. I had a real sense of nostalgia. It was a perfect read for a rainy weekend. But included in the narrative are examples of how non-whites--the main character is half Chinese-- were judged and treated unfairly. The descriptions of Hanna’s thinking as she processes people’s treatment of her are eloquent but not at all heavy handed. It was a satisfying read. I look forward to recommending it.
