I don’t usually enjoy the overly descriptive prose of mix-19th century authors, and this was no different. I longed for more emotion and motive behind Hester’s actions; she was a parable more than a real character. I get that this is considered one of America’s best classics, but I don’t see it holding up in my own rankings.
Moderate: Infidelity
Minor: Racism and Colonisation
