The Sky Below by Scott Parazynski, Susy Flory

4.0

When I was 8, I wanted to be an astronaut. Very badly, in fact. But it turns out that having a major fear of heights was not conducive to joining the astronaut program. So I just was a major supporter.

So this was a really fun read for me. While keeping a very positive overall tone, he gives both the positives and negatives of being in the astronaut program. And the ups and downs of his own life. He fessed up to his own flaws and issues, but again, never in a whiny 'oh I had such hard times' sort of way. The style is relaxed, which makes it a pleasant read, with more of a conversational tone. He uses acronyms and scientific terms, but always explains what they are, so you don't feel totally lost in technojargon. His passions are science and mountain climbing, so he talks about both with obvious love and enthusiasm.

One thing, the Kindle ebook is a Kindle in Motion book, which is fantastic, as there are both photos AND video clips in it. But be warned.... I forgot it was a KIM book when I downloaded it to read and turned away for a moment. When I turned back to my Kindle, the cover photo of Mr. Parazynski blinked at me and I think I jumped out of my chair at least 2 feet! :P
