Batgirl, Vol. 2: Knightfall Descends by Vicente Cifuentes, Ardian Syaf, Gail Simone, Ed Benes, Alitha Martinez

4.0

This volume is leagues above volume one in terms of writing. Simone hit her stride with these issues and I find myself getting sucked in more and more. I wish I could say the same for the artwork. For the most part, it is very good. Realistic and fully fleshed out people. Detailed faces and, while not my favorite color palate (quite dark), it works very well. However, there are times when the faces are entirely disconnected from the action and suck me right out of the book. Barbara's range of faces in one battle midway though through book are two, mildly angry and open mouthed, and the faces of the villains don't show much nuance either. But that gets fixed by the next issue. All in all a good read and although Simone's characterization is much better, it could have used more of her humor. Simone's series like Red Sonja and the New 52 Secret Six are where her writing shines, with a combination of serious and funny.
